Punk Rock Friday - Band of the Day

First off, let me introduce myself. If you have been to a beer booters event...chances are I've shared a conversation with you about bikes or music. I have been fortunate enough to have grown up in Southern California at a time where I was able to see the most amazing bands in some of the best venues like Iguanas (Tiajuana), Acid House (Tiajuana), Showcase Theatre (Corona), World Beat Center (San Diego), SOMA when it was actually South of Market (San Diego), Che Cafe (San Diego), Mesopotamia Cafe (Lemon Grove), Wabash Hall (San Diego), Soul Kitchen (El Cajon), Jackie Robinson YMCA (San Diego), Casbah/Crowbar/Velvet (San Diego)...just to name a few.

My plan is to break up each day of the week with a review of a band per genre...in this format.

Monday - 80s Alternative/New Wave/ Industrial/ Goth

Tuesday - Contemporary Alternative/Neuvo New Wave

Wednesday - Rockabilly/Country Western/Big Band

Thursday - Ska

My first post for Punk Rock Fridays is an easy choice for me...Tiltwheel...as this is my all time favorite band fronted by one of the coolest fucking guys in San Diego, Davey Quinn. I first met Davey through an old Punk BBS (Bulletin Board System) that I ran in the late 80s early 90s. As far as I know...Tiltwheel has always been a trio with Davey on guitar and vocals. The rest of the lineup has gone through many changes including a short stint with Tom DeLong of Blink 182.

Tiltwheel can be best described as Jawbreaker with talent (no offense to Jawbreaker). Obvious influences contributing to their raw style is depression, beer, mexican food, beer, hate, beer, anger, and beer. Favorites include "It's Amazing, the Things You Find in Your Pocket on a Bender", "Louis Hopeless is a Rockstar", and "All I Care About is Me, My Rum, and You." If you get the opportunity to see these guys play live, don't miss it. Drink some beer and you'll feel right at home.

Anchor Humming Ale: American Pale Ale: 5.9% ABV: Seasonal Release: Draft

To commemorate an important milestone in Anchor Brewing’s long history, a special ale seemed appropriate. Having found and experimented with a very rare and unusual hop variety called Nelson Sauvin, we knew that its unique character would impart a wonderful flavor and aroma to a pale ale brewed especially for the occasion: Humming Ale.

If you’re into BMW café racers, you probably know the BMW Café blog, run by Dutchman Michiel de Molenaar. This BMW R80 is the bike that originally got Michiel hooked on building and riding old motorcycles, and shows what can be done with a small budget and a lot of inspiration. He started with a crashed 1988 model, which means it should have a 797 cc version of the classic boxer twin. But the previous owner had changed the original engine for a one-liter motor of unknown provenance. Then the gearbox packed up, so Michiel retro-fitted the transmission and kickstart from an R65—which also allowed him to run a smaller and lighter battery. The exhaust system is home-made, using an old Virago muffler and a one-dollar stainless salad bowl.

“The new rear subframe is made out of a chopped-up bicycle carrier I found in someone’s trash,” says Michiel. “The only really expensive part is the [Acewell] instrument. I wanted a rev counter, speedo and all the idiot lights, but I also wanted to have the most minimalistic cockpit I could find—so I decided to spend some money on that.” The clip-ons are ebay items and the rear sets came off an early 90s Honda sports bike of unknown description. The headlight is a modern Ural part, and the rear fender started life as a Honda CX500 front fender. As they say, “one man’s trash is another man’s treasure”—and Michiel has shown that you don’t need a huge bank balance to make a bike look like a million bucks. BALLAST POINT Indra Kunindra 22oz.

Ballast Point Brewing Company is proud to announce the release of Indra Kunindra India-Style Export Stout in 22oz bottles. You may remember this brew from the big splash it made at the National Homebrewer's Confrence Pro Night back in June. It won second place in the people's choice award balloting and was the talk of the evening.

After nearly a year of wrangling with the ABC and TTB and other sanctioning bodies (who didn't quite know what to think of a beer made with such unique ingredients), we are legal and have beer in bottles. This beer will be available at both of our brewery locations beginning tomorrow.

Indra Kunindra is a 7% ABV export stout created by homebrewer Alex Tweet for a competition held in 2010 at Holiday Wine Cellar in Escondido (who also has these bottles). In addition to a small amount of Fuggle hops used for bittering, five special ingredients are employed. Madras curry, cumin, cayenne, toasted coconut and Kaffir lime leaf all leave their own unique mark on what is sure to be the only brew of it's kind you've ever had.

There are no promises that we will ever make this beer again so be sure and grab this one of a kind offering while you have the opportunity. You won't be disappointed. Cheers!

Last week I took my kid to The Hot Dog Shoppe over here in Temecula. I ordered myself up a Kraut Brat and he had the good ol' American special. The best thing was that they literally only have Pabst on Tap in this Blue Collar Paradise - Pabst is good on tap!

New Belgium Brewery: Dunkelweiss

Deep amber brown with a dense off-white head, Dunkelweiss rediscovers hefeweissbiers through a Belgian brewer’s lens. Envisioned by our own Matty “Smooth” Gilliland, this beer opens with sweet clove, chocolate and banana notes that give way to a warm finish with a peppery tingle across the palate.

“I thought it would be fun to make a German wheat beer; we’ve explored the Belgian wheats pretty thoroughly,” said brewer, Matt Gilliland. “Since this is Lips of Faith, and part of what makes that program fun is to make beers that are really unique and different, making a big, strong, dark Weiss beer sounded pretty folly-licious. It’ll still showcase all of the flavors that a Hefeweiss beer would have, but add in the burly body and extra punch. Think of it as a Gran Cru dunkelweiss.”

New Belgium La Folie,
French for Folly, is a wood-conditioned sour brown beer, having aged one to three years in French oak foeders formerly used in wine production. La Folie is sharp like a lambic, sour in the finish, and redolent of the oaky tannins one might find in a fine wine Cabernet.
