The Brewery:
Pliny the Elder comes in at roughly 8% alcohol, with 6 separate hop additions! This beer is named after Gainus Plinius Secondus, or Pliny The Elder, who came up with the botanicle name for hops - lupus salictarius (wolf among scrubs). Sadlly, Pliny died while helping people escape the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius in August, 79 AD. (see, who says beer can't make you smarter!) With a light malt base and intense hop flavor, this will give any hop-head a run for his money!
Professional Opinion:
Pours a very bright Orange color, if poured correctly it will leave a two inch head which dissipates rather quickly leaving a very light lace around the glass
The nose has a very fresh and wonderful grapefruit, tropical fruits, fresh citrus and grass aroma.
The Beer is considered to be a double IPA, flavors bursting with Pine, pineapple, grapefruit, orange, lemon and a small but perfectly balanced malt backbone. A true double IPA that is considered a hop head beer, but with little tongue buckling that many others offer.
Personal Opinion:
For the last five years living in Temecula I have had a neighbor of mine telling me about the old Temecula brewery and how he grew up with the guy that ran it. The brewery would put flyers out to the neighbors of Temecula and invite them to help bottle their beer three times a year, in return drink all you want and go home with a small care package – pretty fricking cool if you ask me…Years later the owner moved the brewery up to the Russian River brewery where he still remains – all I have to say is; please come back – please!
A few years back I got the chance to try this beer by recommendation and have never looked back. I was absolutely blown away, by not only its flavor but also its looks – just an absolutely beautiful beer.
Needless to say Pliny the Elder is absolutely my favorite beer in the world right now (running for two years now), the citrus notes with the BIG hoppy character that is balanced with just enough malt to kill the bitterness that many double IPA’s have in which makes Pliny the Elder a very refreshing lovely beer.
If you haven’t tried it, then do so you will be truly amazed by the flavor, the pour, the nose – it all wraps up together to create an outstanding great beer.
